Getting to Know Clifford Pickett: Course Instructor

Do you know what makes a lesson interesting aside from its actual contents?

It’s having the right instructor.

Since online courses like these are self-paced, you need to have some sort of motivation to go through all the lessons. It would greatly help if your instructor knows how to make the class fun, interactive, and worthwhile.

Luckily, Clifford Pickett has been doing this for years, and he’s an expert not only in photography but also in providing quality education online.

Now, just who is this guy we’re talking about?

Clifford Pickett is a world-renowned creative, photographer, videographer, and online educator.

He is best known for his digital course Capture It All and iPhone Landscape Mastery, but now, he released another interesting resource – Urban iPhone Photography.

He was born in Long Island and has resided in New York for around 15 years.

But now, Cliff says that he considers himself a digital nomad since he doesn’t stay in one place that much – both for work and personal reasons.

He doesn’t only enjoy photography and traveling to various locations for work, but he also enjoys sharing all his experiences and learnings with his students through his online courses.

Pickett is globally recognized for his iPhone photography skills and he has worked with big brands like Apple, Google, National Geographic, DJI, Adidas, New York University, and many more popular names in various industries.

Here’s a comment left by Marco about Clifford Pickett:

All in all, Cliff is great at what he does and he will inspire you to unleash the creative person in you.

Things to Expect From This Course

Before engaging in a digital course, it’s normal to wonder what you should expect from the lesson and your instructor. We’ve all been there.

If you’ve been a student in any IPS course, or have enrolled in one of Clifford’s classes in the past, you’ll know very well that you are getting your money’s worth, just like Taryn here:

So, just what can you expect from this training?

After watching all the modules, you will:

  • learn to appreciate the city from a different perspective
  • know if the iPhone is good for urban photography
  • discover that cityscapes can be as good as nature and landscape too
  • learn how to take stunning photos on an iOS camera
  • know how to edit these photos for the social media

…and so much more. There will also be personal experiences shared by Cliff and some exclusive tips/techniques you can follow.

Who Is This Course Best For?

The Urban iPhone Photography course is for everyone.

Although it may seem inclusive for those living in the city or those who own an iPhone, there’s so much more to this training for everybody who wants to step up their mobile photography skills.

Actually, as long as your phone has a camera, you can enjoy learning from Cliff and you can certainly apply the universal tips on your own device. You just gotta be a little resourceful in that case.

It’s also intended for people who plan on traveling to popular cities but want to capture shots that are unique compared to other mainstream posts you see on the gram.

Basically, this course is for you if you just want to have fun while taking pictures in the city and if you want to improve your mobile photography. Check out Will’s comment:

Even people from the countryside like Gerald feel excited about it:

Urban iPhone Photography: Course Outline

This online training contains a total of 66 videos that are easy to consume. The entire course runs for 273 minutes, something very short compared to the years of practice Clifford has done to perfect this craft.

It is divided into 4 main modules, plus 2 bonus sections for you.

Here’s how it looks inside:

Let’s check out each lesson!

Module 1. Cityscapes

This module is further divided into various sections for easier consumption. It contains everything you need to know in order to take stunning cityscape photos.

Among these topics are tips on how to take advantage of the “golden hour”, proper skyline shots, techniques in layering for better image results, composition, and so many other valuable learning resources.

Here, Cliff will also teach you how to nail those long-exposure urban photos you always see online.

Module 2. Architecture

The city may not have flowery fields or greeneries, but it certainly has a lot of infrastructure with amazing architectural designs. If you’ve never appreciated the buildings in your area, then this might be your chance to do just that.

Since you’re a local, it’s easy to really take them for granted. You’ve gotten so used to seeing them often, that you end up thinking there’s nothing special about them.

Your coach will help you see these architectures from a different perspective through this module. You’ll discover techniques to help you get unique angles, and how to compose the shot properly.

Clifford will even teach you the proper planning strategy for these photoshoots.

Module 3. Street Scenes

Capturing moments in the streets of a bustling city might look ordinary to some, but in this lesson, you will learn how to make yours stand out.

You’ll be taught how to tell a story through your shots with the raw expressions of the people in the frame plus the city scene in the background.

The thing is that we tend to only focus on the popular landmarks, but you can also take the most amazing shots in places that are less known.

Sometimes, it’s just about presenting your subject in a unique perspective to give it a new light. That’s what you’ll master in this module.

Module 4: Street Photography

One of the most fun, yet challenging genres in this industry is street photography. This is where you’ll experience candid moments that turn into beautiful photographs.

Since you have no direct control over the people in the streets, you’ll have to think outside of the box and be as creative as you can be in composing your shot.

In this section, you’ll master capturing the right moments when they happen. Clifford will tell you how to make your photos speak of a story, how to take advantage of good lighting, and even how to capture humor in your frame.

And of course, when doing street photography, you need to be discreet if you want to include people in your shot, for a variety of reasons. You will also learn that here.

Bonus Module #1: Planning Photoshoot With a Friend

Yes, spontaneous shoots are fun and all, but that might not work out all the time. So, it will be best to know how to properly plan for a photo session in an urban setting, especially if you’re doing it with a friend.

This bonus module will cover all you need to know in the planning stage until the execution part.

Bonus Module #2: Black & White iPhone Photography eBook

This is not really a video lesson.

Rather, it contains a link to a downloadable free eBook about B&W photography on your iOS camera. It has a lot of useful information you can definitely use on your next city escapade.

Course Pricing

Originally, Urban iPhone Photography was priced at $495 for lifetime access.

But, at a discounted price, you can get it for as low as $99 only!

And if you feel like that’s too much for a one-time payment, you can settle it in three payments of $39 per month.

That’s still a good deal if you ask me.

What Are The Students Saying?

One fool-proof way of checking whether an online class is worth your time and investment is through real student reviews. And what do they have to say about Urban iPhone Photography?

Check out below.

Lynne Matthew is happy with all the lessons she learned and is very excited to put them into practice:

You know how they always say it’s easier said than done?

That also applies to photography tips/theories you learn. At some point, you’ll realize that you may not always get the results you want in one try.

But the key here is to practice hard and soon you’ll master it effortlessly.

Wes, on the other hand, praised how much Cliff is a master at portraying the message he wants to get across through his shots:

It’s a skill to be able to get your message across to your target audience without using words.

And that’s what Pickett is showing in this training. This is a result of years of practice and experience, and you too will soon be able to master this.

And Deborah pointed out the most important thing Cliff said in the introduction of the video:

Sticking to the rules is good, but being too strict about it will take the life out of you.

What’s more important than achieving great images is having fun while you’re taking the shots. In fact, that’s what you should be focusing on and the amazing photos will follow.

Things You Will Love About Urban iPhone Photography

Look:

While it’s true that there are a bunch of free resources online you can watch about photography, nothing beats having a dedicated instructor guide you all the way through your journey to progressing as a certified iPhoneographer.

Here are the things I loved about Urban iPhone Photography, and I think you will too:

Practice Projects

Throughout the course, there will be assignments and tasks you can work on to put your new learning into practice.

This is really helpful because theoretical knowledge can only take you so far. It is with practice that you get to really experience the highs and lows of photographing the urban setting.

But don’t get confused.

There is no separate module for these assignments. You can find it within the specific sections for which the practice projects are intended.

And by the way, these are all optional projects. You may or may not do it. There’s no submission deadline whatsoever.

Lifetime Access

Some authors and publishers will ask you to pay a monthly membership fee to be able to access their resources. But the good thing about IPS is that they don’t force you into taking courses that you don’t really need (or want).

Each course is priced differently/separately so that you can only enroll in classes you choose. Plus, you only pay for this one time and you’ll have access to it for life.

Self-paced Learning

Since this is an online class, there’s really no one to monitor your progress or how much you’ve absorbed after watching the videos. In short, you will need to have as much self-discipline as much as you can in order to make the most out of it.

On a brighter note, it is also self-paced learning. It means there will be no pressure on your end and you can watch as many (or as few) modules as you want. If you think you can finish it in a week, then that would be okay.

But if you’re the busy type and just want to take it slow, that will totally be okay as well. No deadlines, no submissions of projects, no hassle.

Exclusive Community

Once you purchase this course, you will have instant access to a beautiful private community for iPhoneographers like you. This is an avenue where you can share your concerns, questions, milestones, and progress freely.

Plus, the course instructors also participate in discussions so you will get the chance to interact with them.

Daily Photo Tips

When IPS said you’ll gain lifetime access to the learning resources, they weren’t only talking about the lessons alone. They also made sure you stay in the loop and get constant updates and photo tips to help you with your photography journey.

That’s not something you get anywhere online. You’ll have a lifetime support system for your craft with them.

Things That Could Be Improved

As good as it looks, the Urban iPhone Photography course isn’t perfect, just like any other online class. Though there seems to be nothing major that needs improvement, one thing many of us students wished the video format wasn’t on Portrait mode only.

Gerson Camargo thinks that overall this is a great course, but would have loved it more if there was an option for the video to be in landscape orientation:

But then again, IPS staff explained that this was shot on an iPhone and that they made the course with social media users in mind. Since most platforms are in portrait orientation, it will be easier for you to post and share your shots.

Well, they have a point right there. It isn’t a major flaw, but the narrow perspective might throw you off in the beginning if you’ve gotten used to a horizontal layout before.

Is Urban iPhone Photography Worth It?

Now, after reading all those things above, is Urban iPhone Photography really worth it?

Definitely YES!

You are not only getting your money’s worth but also an amazing community of like-minded individuals who can help you become better at your craft or who you can resonate with.

The bottom line is that Urban iPhone Photography can help you advance your skillset to another niche/genre outside of the one you are well-accustomed to already.

And if you want to truly master all things iPhone photography, then you should check out these courses:

The iPhone Photography School courses are extremely popular for a reason — they deliver a lot for value, and have a lot of different courses whatever genre you’re interested in.
